Jim, era maestro, y más tarde, se profesionalizaría como periodista (journalist) y foto-periodista. Trabajaba como "free lance", para una empresa de noticias americana, "GlobalPost", hasta Que el día 22 de noviembre del año 2O12, fue secuestrado, junto con otros dos compañeros de trabajo, en la provincia de Idlib, cerca de la ciudad de Taftanaz, en el noroeste de Siria, por un grupo de hombres armados, perteneciente al "Estado Islámico (ISIS), mientras cubría la Guerra Civil del ya mencionado país asiático. Jim era católico. Un mes después de su secuestro, los padres de Jim, denunciaron su captura, tratando a su vez de llegar a un buen término con sus captores, para lograr su definitiva y felíz liberación.
